INTRODUCTION
More than 3100 delegates from 122 coun-
tries gathered in Wroclaw (pronounced
Vro-tz-wav) in southwestern Poland Au-
gust 19-25, 2017 for the 83rd World Library
and Information Congress (WLIC). WLIC
is the annual general meeting of the Inter-
national Federation of Library Associations
and Institutions (IFLA). With an overall
theme of Libraries. Solidarity. Society.
this year's conference provided 247 educa-


tional programs along with a wealth of oth-
er educational, networking and planning
opportunities in the form of committee
(and other sub-group) meetings, satellite
meetings, poster sessions, receptions, and
other gatherings. The conference took place
in the historic Centennial Hall (Hala
Stulecia), built in 1913 and named a
UNESCO World Heritage   Site in 2006.

OPENING  SESSION
IFLA President Donna Scheeder and IFLA
Secretary General Gerald Leitner opened
the conference. Both leaders encouraged
delegates to vote in IFLA's Global Vision
Discussion, which explores how a connect-
ed and united library field can meet the
challenges of the future. Others extending
greetings included Poland's Deputy Prime
Minister of Culture, who brought a message
