In June 2016, I traveled to Havana, Cuba
with colleagues from Yale Law School for
our annual SELA conference (Seminario en
Latinoam6rica de Teoria Constitucional y
Politica). This year it was co-hosted by the
Fundaci6n Antonio Nufiez Jim6nez. After
the conference, I had the pleasure and privi-
lege of visiting the national library of Cuba
where I spent the morning with two gene-
rous and knowledgeable professionals: Yo-
landa Nufiez Gonzalez, Principal Specialist
in International Relations; and Maritza Mi-
rabal, Associate Director for Technical Ser-
vices.

After a substantial breakfast shared with
three colleagues from Argentina, I headed
out on foot to the Biblioteca Nacional de
Cuba Jos6 Marti (BNC). The morning


showers had just ended and the steam was
visibly rising from the sidewalk. The sun
was out. I was melting. So I hopped in a
1950s-era red Buick and was whisked off in
style to my date with my Cuban colleagues.
Good  thing, too, as it was a much longer
walk to the Plaza de la Revoluci6n than I
had anticipated.

Aside: One thing I'd noticed upon arriving
in Cuba was that no one moves fast. It's just
too hot and humid to move any faster than
a snail, or maybe a turtle. And that's fine
with me since I was a few minutes late to
every date I had there - and I was always
the first one to arrive!

PHYSICAL SPACE
I arrived at the BNC shortly after 10 and
walked into a spectacularly open and simple
