The Future Is Bright
Timothy Kearley
Greetings. Another year, and yet another
regime takes over the helm of our SIS. I suspect
that just about the time I step down and our
Vice-Chair/Chair-elect, Janet Zagorin, takes
over I'll have figured out how to do the job. This
raises an issue some of us have seen coming in
the last few years. The SIS may want to
consider changing the terms of office (currently
one year) to two years (after I step down, of
course). Alternatively or at the same time, the
SIS may want to consider going to single
candidate elections. Given the small number of
active members in our group, there is a real
problem finding several interested people, who
are not already overworked, to run for SIS
offices each year.

Feature Article: Russian, Soviet Law
Collection at Harvard Law Library - 15

Milagros R. Rush
For a year I resisted doing this column. This
time, however, there are a couple of things that I
want to be explicit about.
First, Kevin Jewell's article on the Russian and
Soviet Law Collections at Harvard Law Library
is at the end of this issue, instead of on this spot.
This doesn't mean that it is less important than
the first two articles in the series; in fact, I
decided to change the layout to make it easier to
clip and save these articles, should you wish to
do so. I think they potentially have enduring
relevancy, even more than the list of officers
which is good for only a year if not less.
Second, one of the ideas that I brought back
from the Newsletter Editing Workshop this
summer is to periodically survey the readership
as to what it wants to read about in the
newsletter. I certainly want to know what you
wish to see published. After all, for some (if not
most) of us the newsletter is probably the only
way that we communicate with each other
nation-wide (world-wide, since we have
international members?) outside of the Annual
Meetings.
I will not subject all of us to an elaborate
survey; at the bottom of page 12 is a tear-off
slip that you can scribble on and return to me.
At the same time, I will need you to suggest
corresponding writers, columnists, etc., if
possible (volunteer yourself, why not?) Please
feel free to use separate sheets as needed and to
send in suggestions any time.
On the flip side, take this also as a solicitation
for your opinion as to which items should not be
included.
