EDITORIAL

      Welcome to the first issue of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice: An Interdisciplinary
Journal. This new journal represents the combined efforts of members of the juvenile
justice section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and Sage Publications. The
fundamental goal of this journal is to provide an academic outlet for empirical research and
writing on the important subjects of youth violence and juvenile justice. Although many
academic journals in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, social work, education, law,
and other related disciplines routinely publish articles on youth violence and juvenile
justice, we feel that this is the first journal specifically devoted to these topics. The
fundamental goal of this journal is to be the preeminent source for dissemination of
academic and practitioner information and research on youth violence and juvenile justice.
Accomplishing this goal is made even more difficult by the very fact that so many academic
disciplines have a vested interest in these subjects. In addition, as anyone who has worked
or researched the juvenile justice system will attest, the sheer number of academics,
practitioners, organizations, and other actors involved in juvenile justice is enormous. To
this end, rather than attempting to carve out a small niche in the fields of youth violence and
juvenile justice, we will embrace the diversity of interests in these areas and attempt to
represent these interests in the pages of this journal. If the goal of being the preeminent
journal in youth violence and juvenile justice is possible, it can only be accomplished by
representing all of the diversity of interests currently present in the system. We are fortunate
to have representation from a variety of perspectives and disciplines on our editorial board.
The list of prominent academics in this area who agreed to serve on this journal's editorial
board is clearly qualified to help us achieve the goals of this journal.
      Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice seeks to serve both academics and practitioners
in the field of juvenile justice. Submissions to the journal can be either quantitative or
qualitative, with a decided emphasis on applicability of the research to the field of juvenile
justice, youth violence prevention, and school safety. The clear focus of this journal is on
the systems of juvenile justice in the United States and abroad. As such, both empirical and
theoretical articles related to the juvenile justice system are welcomed. We will attempt to
serve as a bridge between the academics and practitioners in the field of juvenile justice and
those charged with preventing youth violence. As such, program evaluations, policy
analyses, empirical research, and practical, theoretical, legal, and qualitative analyses of
juvenile justice are all welcomed submissions. Substantive areas for articles include the
following:

      *  juvenile justice system philosophy
      *  the juvenile court,
      *  police and juveniles,
      * juvenile corrections and correctional programming,
      *  juvenile probation and parole,
      * juvenile waiver to adult court,
      *  diversion,
