ABA Bar Center
At Chicago
JBC Pledges Support in
Fund Raising Campaign
Withl construction of the American Bar
Center scheduled to lregin in Chicago
early next sulniner on a site contributed
by the University of Chicago, the Fund
Raising Comnnittee is now working ener-
getically under the direction of George
Maurice Morris of Washington, D. C.
One building will serve as headquar-
ters for the ABA and other affiliated
organizations of tire legal profession.
the second building will he a national
Service Center for research in the law,
where for the first time a single library
will contain all publications of State and
local bar associations, as well as of
other units of the organized bar.
As a legal clearing house, the Center
will provide close cooperation among
various associations, law schools and in-
dividuals arid eliminate iuch duplica-
tion of research relating to current prob-
lelnnir
The cost of fle building and its initial
operatin will total $2,000,000. Of this
ariount $1,500,000 is being sought front
ienibers of the legal proifession. with
another $1,500,000 being contributed by
outside sources. In addition, the Fund
has received a bequest of $400,000 for
this purpose. Proceeds of the expected
sale of the Association's present head-
quarters will also be applied to the
project.
Each Section of the ABA will be al-
lotted a quota, with the goal being $75
per reniber. However, the JBC will
not be required to make a contribution
as a Section. Since the younger lawyers
will derive the greatest benefit fromr the
Center, Richard I-. Bowernoan has
iledged the JBC's active support.

Coordination and Cooperation
Key to 1953 Program of JBC
Chairman, Richard H. Bowerman
According to Mr. Bowerman, the
phrase coordination and cooperation
refers not only to the work of the Con-
ference members anid committees, but
also to the relationship which should
exist between younger lawyers aid ABA
sections arid comnnittees. Currently, the
chief objective of the JBC, in the Chair-
man's words, is to achieve a closed in-
tegration between the component parts
(coommittees and affiliated local groups)
(if lie Conference, in order that the un-
derlying purposes of the JBC rlsy be
better accioiplished.
In the interest of assisting the younger
attorney in fulfilling his obligation to
maintain the dignity and integrity of
the legal profession, ttre JltC Conimittee
on Unauthorized Practice plais a na-
tional search for instances in which the
publie has suffered at the hands of non-
lawyers, whir attemipt to advise oii legal
prolleis. These exainlrles will then lie
puhlicizer through the Conference's
Public lr orratior Program. Within
lie JBC itself, the Coinnittee on Law
Students is aiding in the work of the
Courts of Limited Jurisdiction Com-
milten liy providing student assistance
for the latter's required legal research
in the preparation of a national nanual.
Another J1lC objective for the ,ear
is that the Conference will take a more
active part in the various A13A programis,
through direct cooperation with other
sections and coniinritlees of the Associa-
tion. Exaniples of this iter-section co-
operatin nay be found in the Oiliaba
Regional Meeting; the Ilicrriind Re-
gioral neeling, at which the Conference
will be the co-sponsor of a prograi with
the Section on Judicial Administration;
and, finally, the ABA Building Fund
drive.
