Midyear Meeting-Chicago, February 20-22

LL JBC members are invited to attend the mid-
year meeting at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in
Chicago, February 20-22. See the February ABA
Journal or contact the JBC office at the American
Bar Center for further details and reservations.
Highlights of the program are:
Friday, February 20: (1) JBC officers and directors
meeting; (2) Joint circuit meeting of sixth, seventh
and eighth circuits, at which JBC activities and
state and local young lawyer group programs will
be discussed by JBC officials and chairmen and other
representatives of such groups in the three circuits.
A luncheon with a prominent speaker, to be an-
nounced, and an early evening party at the Chicago
Bar Association for those in attendance are enter-
tainment features.
Saturday, February 21: (1) Sessions of the JBC
Executive Council-some of the topics to be dis-
cussed are found in committee reports on pages 2
and 3; (2) Luncheon with ABA section officials at
the exclusive Saddle and Cycle Club; (3) A practical
legal education seminar. See bulletin on page 2.
Sunday, February 22: (1) Further Council sessions
if necessary; (2) Further meetings of officers, direc-
tors, and committees to formulate plans for the
balance of this year, including the annual meeting.
Proposed Legislation Would Provide
Compensation for Appointed Counsel
in Federal Courts
The JBC Legal Aid and Federal Legislation Committees have
been active in support of programs to enact Federal legislation
providing compensation to appointed or assigned counsel in
Federal courts. This legislation is considered by the JBC to be of
particular interest and importance to younger lawyers. JBC
Chairman Kirk M. McAlpin of Savannah, Georgia, has an-
nounced that its passage is one of the priority aims of his adminis-
tration, and contacts have already been made with the office of
the Attorney General and with the House Judiciary Committee
to advise them of the Conference's interest and support. Further
JBC activity and support is being planned by Walter F. Sheble
of Washington, D.C., and Donald A. Wine of Davenport, Iowa,
chairmen of the JBC committees involved. A special program for
action will be prepared and presented for Executive Council con-
sideration at the midyear meeting.
As far back as 1944, and again in May, 1958, the ABA approved

JBC Award Program Announced
The JBC Award of Achievement program for the
year 1958-59 has been recently announced by Frank
C. Jones of Macon, Georgia, Chairman of the Award
of A chievment Committee. All state and local junior
bar organizations affiliated with the Junior Bar Con-
ference are eligible to participate in the competition.
Any young lawyers' organization with age require-
ments similar to those of the JBC is qualified to
apply for affiliation.
The awards are sponsored by the JBC to encourage
