Los Angeles Host
To ABA Annual
Meeting Aug. 22
Splendid plans are already in the wind
for the Junior Bar Conference portion of
the ABA's Annual Meeting in Los An-
p rlea next August. Dick Alden, Chair-
man of the JBC Arrangements Con-
mittee, reports that festivities officially
begin on Friday evening Aug. 22 at JBC
Headquarters, the Biltmore, with the an-
nual Candidates Cocktail Party.
Before launching into a description of
the various social and educational events
planned, let me assure all JBCers that
the Biltmore is reported to be a fine,
attractive, and modern establishment.
Advance photos paint it as a most in-
viting hotel, complete with swimming
pool, Also, it is convenient to the ABA
Headquarters Hotel, the Statler.
A word to the wise: if you plan to
come to the Annual Meeting (and we
hope you'll be persuaded), make your
reservations promptly and request space
at JBC Headquarters or nearby for max-
imum enjoyment.
The Annual Meeting Arrangements
Committee plans to operate a Registra-
tion Desk at the Biltmore on Friday,
Saturday, apd Sunday, in conjunction
with a Junior Bar Hospitality Room.
The latter to serve as a meeting place
for the lawyers and to assist them in be-
coming acquainted. Special plans are
also being made to entertain the JBC
wives.
Dance at Beverly-Hilton
Saturday's schedule begins with a con-
tinental style breakfast and includes the
initial meeting of the Conference's newly
created Assembly, a Workshop on Suc-
cessful Junior Bar Projects, possibly a
scheduled luncheon, topped off by a Cock-
tail Party hosted by the Los Angeles Bar
Assn. The locale for the Patty and the

being served around the pool. Dick
Alden advises that the Committee feels
that the Beverly-Hilton reflects the
Southern California atmosphere, com-
bining both a proximity to JBC Head-
quarters (9 mi. west-close by Califor-
nia calculations) and a flavor of Beverly
HilIs-Hollywood.
Although Sunday morning has been
left free, the Executive Council is sched-
uled to convene in the afternoon. Awards
of Merit, Resolutions, and Nominating
Committees will also meet. The Arrange-
ments Committee is also toying with the
idea of arranging beach or other trips
to the ocean area. Sunday evening fea-
tures the ABA President's Reception,
always a worthwhile event.
Monday noon will be the witching hour
for the Annual JBC Luncheon, featuring
Hon. Stanley N. Barnes of the U. S.
Court of Appeal (C.A.9). A JBC Gen-
eral Session in the afternoon will hear
the results of the deliberations of the
Awards of Merit, Resolutions, and Nom-
inating Committees. Election of Officers
follows.
Personal Finance Debate
At 4 p.m., the traditional Personal
Finance Debate with four Conference
members as participants will occur, fol-
lowed by the Annual Reception of the
Conference on Personal Finance Law in
honor of the JBC. The Committee also
may arrange tours of movie or TV
studios for visiting lawyers and their

will be hoid at St. Louis on June 11
through 13, with headquarters at the
Sheraton-Jefferson Hotel. All lawyers
(whether ABA members or not) from the

commencing with a get acquainted
party, preceding the St. Louis Cardinals
baseball game (for which tickets will be
available). The opening session of the
Regional Meeting will be Thursday morn-
ing June 12.
Customarily, the highlight of Regional
Meetings are the Workshop Sessions,
which are so pleasantly educational and
which deal with such a wide variety of
practical legal problems. The St. Louis
Meeting will be no exception in this
regard, for Workshops are planned for
Thursday afternoon, Friday morning and
afternoon.
The Judicial Administration Section,
under the guiding hand of Judge Bolitha
J. Laws' (Wash., D. C.) Committee, plans
one of its famous Law and the Layman
Workshop. The Criminal Law Section
has scheduled a Workshop on Recent
Supreme Court Decisions affecting law
enforcement with Aset. A. G. D. Malcolm
Anderson, Edw. B enn et t Williams
(Wash., D. C.), and a local prosecutor.
* For most younger lawyers the high
spot iii Woikshop calendar will be the
Trial Tactics session sponsored by the
ABA Insurance, Negligence & Compensa-
tion Section together with the JB3C, to
be held on Friday morning June 13. John
C. Shepherd of St. Louis is primarily
responsible for this activity on behalf
of both the JBC and the Section.

held Friday evening, followed by a dance
at the Sheraton-Jefferson Hotel for all
Regional Meeting participants, but spon-
sored by the Junior Bar. Throughout the
Meeting, the JBC will maintain a Hospi-
tality Room at the Sheraton-Jefferson for
the benefit of the younger lawyers in
attendance. Another attraction planned
is a night at the St. Louis Municipal
Opera.
* On Saturday June 14, the JBC plans
to sponsor a meeting of Junior Bar rep-
resentatives from the surrounding states.

observaoee of LAW DAY U.S.A.
President Eisenhower has proclaimed
May 1, 1958, as Law Day, and has urged
the citizens of our land to bserce the day
with appropriate ceremonies and activi-
ties. Ia endorsing the President's proc.
lamation, the ABA has called upon all
lawyers ad bar associations to partiet-
pate in the observance of this day.
The purpose of LAW DAY is to
strengthen the nation'ls dedication to the
rule of law as the foundation of our free
society, and to freshen every American
citizen's awareness of the rights and
privileges which he enjoys by reason of
our system of laws and courts.

JBC Launches Drive for 12,000
ABA Members by Law Day May 1
Since the very successful 1955 membership drive (in which the JBC obtained
48X of all new ABA members), the Junior Bar Conference has assumed the role
of the ABA's membership arm. With Robert G. Storey, Jr., of Dallas, the JBC
Natl. Chairman in 1955, as Chairman of the ABA Membership Committee, it is
logical that the primary emphasis during the 1958 recruitment campaign will be on
the Conference as the impetus behind the ABA campaign for 12,000 new ojemobcrs.
