                  Theory and Practice:

                  Finding the Balance



   It has been said that life is not so much a process of learning a number
of lessons as it is a process of learning the same lesson a number of times.
I would like to share two life experiences that taught and retaught me a
lesson that we will try and make a part of our editorial approach to this
journal.
   When I took my first field assignment in the Army, I was sent to run a
Mental Health Clinic at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I had a very talented staff.
Two  of them had been drafted out of graduate school 6 months before
they had completed their PhD in Psychology. Three had Masters De-
grees in Psychology and one had a Masters Degree in English. Finally,
one had a five-year Bachelors degree that he had earned in part by work-
ing full time on a ward at a Mental Hospital in Boston.
   One of our tasks at the Clinic was to assess GIs who were having dif-
ficulty adjusting to Army life, writing a report for the GI's Commander,
and recommending   interventions designed to keep the trooper in the
Army,  if possible. The first time I reviewed the staffs work, I sent the
draft reports they had written back to them looking like I had slit my
