                              EDITORIAL

                    Eight Was Not Enough

During the past year, a new editorial team including myself, Douglas Smith,
Lindsey O'Brennan, and the editorial board have been working diligently to
provide a smooth transition for Journal of School Violence (JSV) after Dr. Edwin
Gerler's remarkable eight-year editorship. Under Dr. Gerler's foundational
leadership and dedication, the field of school violence and safety research
now has a primary outlet for research on crisis prevention, school climate,
and interventions aimed at creating safe and secure schools for our students.
All school violence researchers owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Gerler.
Over the coming year, we will build on Dr. Gerler's efforts by continuing
the expansion of the literature across these areas of interest to enhance the
status of school violence research among educational, psychological, and
public health scholars. An additional aim will be to address areas of positive
psychology as they relate to school violence, as this topic is often neglected in
the violence prevention research. We need to focus not just on keeping stu-
dents safe and secure, but on how to help them thrive in schools that have
climates conducive to learning. Success in these efforts will allow JSV to serve
as a leading resource for researchers, policy makers, and school-based practi-
tioners within the field of school violence prevention and intervention.
We also acknowledge the tireless efforts put forth by our editorial board,
as they are the core of the journal. We are thrilled to be working with such
esteemed colleagues in the field of school violence and prevention research
who are leaders internationally. Other professionals are encouraged to join the
editorial board if interested by contacting JSV directly (jsv@education.ucsb.edu).
We have created a website that provides information about the journal as
well as guidelines for submitting manuscripts. We invite you to visit it period-
ically for updates. http://web.me.com/michaelfurlong/JSV/Home.html
