handle is hein.journals/wjsv7 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITORIAL The Violence in Children's Lives As a professor in a counselor education program, I have many oppor- tunities to interact and work with practicing school counselors in North Carolina and many other parts of the United States. I also hear from counseling professionals and human service specialists from many other parts of the world. These counselors and other human service spe- cialists have interesting and challenging professional lives that often touch the very core of human existence and that often bring contact with unimaginable tragedy. One of my close colleagues and I (Baker & Gerler, 2004) recounted one such tragic contact told us by a school counselor from a rural com- munity in the northeastern United States: I meet with small groups of children every week, giving them an op- portunity to discuss their feelings about many aspects of their lives. These groups help the children to feel welcome at school and to know the benefits of self-disclosure and listening. Recently, while discussing the topic the saddest thing that ever happened to me, a fourth-grade girl reluctantly raised her hand. When I looked toward her, she brought her hand down quickly. She seldom said anything in the group and generally appeared shy and reserved in social situ- ations.
