EDITORIAL


    Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution

  The Journal of School Violence is always looking for interesting
studies of interventions that help to prevent violence in schools. The
Journal is particularly in need of studies about peer mediation programs
and about the impact of these programs on violence prevention. Peer medi-
ation is one among many types of conflict resolution that exist in schools
across the world.
  The two most common types of peer mediation programs seem to be
(1) the cadre approach, in which a few students receive training to
serve as peer mediators for an entire school, and (2) the total school
approach, in which all students in a school or in a class are taught how
to manage conflicts constructively and are given the opportunity to be
a mediator.
  The cadre approach to peer mediation programs often includes us-
ing mediators who are taught peer mediation practices and methods
in an elective course. The teacher of the elective course typically
serves as the peer mediation coordinator. This cadre approach
works well in a high school or magnet school where many electives
are offered. The advantages of this approach include depth of train-
ing, ease of scheduling, and access to mediators. Its weakness is
that only students who are enrolled in the elective course serve as
