Educators throughout the world are looking for ways to create aca-
demic environments that promote intellectual, psychological, and social
development, freeing young people from the lethargy, anxiety, and prej-
udice that often leads to violent behavior. School counselors and other
human service professionals in the schools, including school psycholo-
gists and social workers, have key roles in creating secure school envi-
ronments that challenge and support students as they work toward
academic success and toward productive lives as adults. The evolving
School Counseling Activities Network (www.scan2lst.com) encour-
ages the collaboration of human services professionals across the world
in the creation of online projects and techniques that lead to welcoming,
challenging, and secure school environments for children and adoles-
cents (Baker & Gerler, 2004). The Journal of School Violence, in fact, is
one of the scholarly products featured prominently on the scan21st net-
work.
