EDITORIAL


           When Analogies Go Wrong



  The ABCs of correctional governance teach that at the beginning
some hapless person was stoned to death for harms charged to him
whether real or imagined. Flogging, drowning, decapitation, muti-
lation and burning were suitable alternatives that succeeded in
drawing what would today be the equivalent of the seven o'clock tv
news audience that yields advertisers high returns of their invest-
ments. Then our ABCs instruct us there was slavery. In the name of
some divine principle echoed in the hallowed vaults of edifices de-
voted to prayer, peace, love of humanity and civility we were
taught that inferior people could be raised to our higher level of
spiritual and material well-being by means of a prolonged period of
unquestioning obedience and forced labor. Then, because we rarely
pay attention to all our ABCs we skip about and recall the lessons
addressed to the military analogy: rigorous discipline applied to the
daily life schedules of wrongdoers will inculcate that degree of in-
ternalized discipline via some unidentifiable process, call it osmo-
sis, absorption, role modeling, aversive conditioning, reinforced
