      ABSTRACT. Allegations of domestic violence are among the most dif-
      ficult to assess when they are posed during a child custody evaluation.
      We  discuss the social and political context within which such evalua-


   Jonathan W. Gould, PhD, ABPP  (Forensic) is engaged in the practice of forensic
psychology and is a partner in the national consulting consortium, Child Custody Con-
sultants. He consults with attorneys on issues related to child custody and other related
family law issues. In addition, he has written extensively about child custody matters.
He is author of the book, Conducting Scientifically Crafted Child Custody Evaluations
(2nd edition) and is co-author with Dr. Martindale of the book, The Art and Science of
Child Custody Evaluations. He has authored or co-authored more than three dozen arti-
cles about custody related topics. Dr. Gould is Board Certified in Forensic Psychology
by the American Board of Professional Psychology.
   David A. Martindale, PhD, ABPP (Forensic), board certified in forensic psychology
by the American Board of Professional Psychology, performed court-appointed custody
evaluations for 16 years in New York. He served as the Reporter for the Association of
Family and Conciliation Courts' Model Standards for Child Custody Evaluation. His
practice is now limited to consulting with attorneys, psychologists, and psychology li-
censing boards in the areas of child custody and professional ethics and standards. He is a
partner in the national consulting consortium, Child Custody Consultants.
   Melisse H. Eidman, MSW, LCSW,  began her work in the field of custody in 1989 as a
child custody evaluator for the Family Law Section of Los Angeles Superior Court. She
joined the staff of Family Court Services, Alameda County (California) Superior Court
in 1991 as a mediator and worked in that position until 2007 when she assumed the posi-
tion of administrator of Family Court Services for Contra Costa County (California) Su-
perior Court. In addition to her work as a mediator, Ms. Eidman has a private practice
specializing in divorce related services that include custody evaluations, co-parenting
counseling, private mediation, and counseling services to children and their families.
