Welcome From the Editor to Volume 11,
                 Journal of Child Custody

                           ROBERT GEFFNER
Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma, Alliant International University,
                            San Diego, California

As president of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT) at Alliant
International University, it gives me great pleasure to become the Editor of the
Journal of Child Custody (JCC): Applying Research to Practice and
Policies. The IVAT Publications and Dissemination Department will be hand-
ling the editing review logistics for 2014. This journal adds another needed
dimension to IVAT's overall dissemination program of providing the most cur-
rent research, tools, interventions, measures, and strategies in dealing with
complex forensic issues. Divorce and child custody disputes involve obvious
trauma to all parties. Thus, there is a need in the field to have peer-reviewed,
current information of high quality that would deal with the specific issues of
child custody. The need for high quality information and research has become
even more important as child custody evaluators, mental health professionals,
attorneys, judges, advocates, and family court services personnel have been
trying to deal with issues of trauma, family violence, substance abuse, and
child maltreatment allegations in the context of child custody disputes.
Fortunately, most cases of divorce do not involve high conflict child custody
disputes. However, when they do, it is imperative that we use guidelines and
procedures that are supported by relevant theory and research, and that they
meet appropriate standards of professional practice and care.
In this highly volatile field, it is important to establish and promote
research-based assessment strategies and procedures that adhere to ethical
guidelines. It is important to have peer-reviewed research to help maintain
a more objective basis to decision-making. It is also imperative that we do
not focus on labels as the main issue, but rather on behaviors that can be
observed or reported. It is time we integrated our knowledge, practice,
