     GUEST EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION

                      Racial Profiling

                         George E. Higgins

Racial profiling is an important issue in contemporary society. Profil-
ing is a conglomeration of physical, behavioral, and psychological com-
ponents that increase the probability of apprehending a suspect.
According to Withrow (2006), race was introduced into profiling in
the 1980s to identify drug couriers. Since this time, race has become a
staple in profiles used to identify criminals. Thus, the issue of racial
profiling is important to understand because of the nature of racial

justice are more important than race and justice. A review of the empir-

(e.g., policing, courts, and corrections). Understanding racial profiling
will assist policymakers and criminal justice officials in developing
proper methods to alleviate this derogatory practice.

this process. Second, this special edition provides information about ra-

racial profiling occurs in policing excluding corrections. Further, the ra-
