Editorial
The publication of the first issue of War Crimes, Genocide, &
Crimes against Humanity achieves two shared goals that
emerged from a series of casual conversations among a
group of scholars from law, sociology, criminal justice,
criminology, and political science. Those conversations
concluded that there was a need for a publication that
provided an outlet for and encouraged multi- and interdis-
ciplinary inquiry into the broad range of acts prohibited by
international criminal, humanitarian, and human rights law.
We also believed this publication should be free and easily
accessible, an open access journal that would encourage the
involvement of scholars in nations where the high costs of
modem scholarly publications make participation in
intellectual dialog difficult.
The journal's title is derived from the three crimes
currently within the jurisdiction of the newly formed Inter-
national Criminal Court (ICC). Those original conversations
were spurred by concern over the horrific acts that led to the
establishment of the international tribunals for Rwanda and
the former Yugoslavia, and that ultimately provided the
impetus for the Rome Statute establishing the ICC. The
establishment of a new justice system, represented by the
ICC, sets the stage for a new discourse on crime and justice
