SUPREME COURT OPENS 1957 TERM--
The Supreme Court today convened for the first session
of the October Term, 1957, and, after the admission of at-
torneys to practice, recessed until October 14, at which
time it will begin to hear oral argument in scheduled ca-
ses*
CASES SCHEDULED FOR ARGUMENT--
A few of the principal questions to be presented for
the Court's consideration during the week of October 14
are set forth below:
SMITH ACT--Petitioners, in reargument, contest the
validity of the membership clause of the Smith Act,
maintaining that their indictments failed to charge an
offense, in view of 14(f) of the Internal Security Act of
1950, providing that neither the holding of office nor
membership in any communist organization shall per se
constitute a violation of that or any other criminalsta-
tute. Scales v. U. S., Dkt. 3, and Lightfoot v. U. S.,
Dkt. 4.
