ENHANCING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CSR IN
          DEVELOPING COUNTRIES TO ACHIEVE
     SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: INDONESIAN
                           PERPSPECTIVE

The existence of Transnational Corporations (TNCs) in developing
countries may affect the economic growth in developing countries as well
as the environment. It is very common that in order to enhance economic
growth in developing countries, the developing countries jeopardize their
environment especially over exploitation of the natural resources.
Therefore, it is paramount to harmonize between economic growth and
protection of the environment. The adoption of sustainable development
principle by the World Commission on Environment and Development has
become a benchmark to overcome the bad impacts of economic growth.
Sustainable development offers a new paradigm that changes the pattern of
economic activities. It will lead to the economic growth and environmental
sustainability. Hence, it is indispensable for economic activities to
implement policy that enables them to achieve the goals of sustainable
development. One promising step toward this achievement is to implement
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR consists of policies that
express a company's commitment to develop economically while improving
the quality of life and without degrading the environment. Hence CSR can
be used as a tool to achieve sustainable development. The paper is aimed to
analyze the relationship between CSR and sustainable development in
Indonesia as well as the economic sustainability based on international law
perspective. Furthermore, the paper is also aimed to examine the role of
CSR in Indonesia in enhancing economic growth to achieve sustainable
development. The methodology employed in this paper is library research
and the approach used is normative. The paper finds that there is
interdependence between economic growth and sustainable development.
The sustainability of the economy depends on the sustainability of the
     environment.
