Justice Richard D. Fybel (Ret.)

AUTHOR

The Author recently retired after serving twenty years as an associate justice on the California
Court of Appeal. Justice Fybel is a graduate of the UCLA School of Law and in 2005 received the
UCLA School of Law Alumnus of the Year Award for Public and Community Service. For many
years, Justice Fybel was an adjunct professor at the Fowler School of Law at Chapman University
and co-taught a seminar entitled The Holocaust, Genocide, and the Law. He is a co-author of
The California Judicial Conduct Handbook (4th edition) and, for 18 years, was the Chairperson of
the California Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on the Code of Judicial Ethics.

Justice Fybel is profoundly grateful to Julianne Sartain Bancroft (UCLA School of Law, 1990),
Senior Research Attorney of the California Court of Appeal, for her valuable assistance. The same
gratitude to brother Gary Fybel for researching and memorializing our family history and to Uncle
Harry Fybel for sharing his memories. Thanks to the editors of Discourse, especially Zoe Goldberg
and Jessica Del Castillo, and to Chapman University Professors Marilyn Harran and Michael
Bazyler for their constructive suggestions.
