and Technology
Vol. 7, No. 1 Mark E. Estes, Editor July/August 1995
1995 Space Requirements & Price List
for Selected Legal Resources, Part 1
(Editor's Note: This originally appeared in the Minnesota State Law Library County Law Library
Program Bulletin No. 70 (May 1995). It has been edited for Trends readers by eliminating publisher
names and most references to Minnesota county law library needs. Part 2 will be in the next issue.)

T his annual list is intended to be a basic
tool for budget and space planning. It is
a selection of print titles typically found in
Minnesota law libraries. It is not required or
recommended that every title be available in
every county law library or that the collection
be limited to the titles on this list.
It is wise to add an extra 10% to 15% to the
total to cover increases in subscription costs
and any recompiled or new volumes added
to digests or other sets.
To further assist in collection development,
the availability of microform and CD-ROM
formats is noted. See the discussion of these
formats, as well as electronic access, below.
Today's library manager must weigh all these
options in order to provide the most cost-
effective and complete access to legal mate-
rials for their constituencies.
READING THE CHART
Resource: Resources were measured on Feb-
ruary 1, 1995. The last volume measured has
been indicated, where relevant. The following
are some of the alternatives to hardcopy
resources.

Microform can be a cost-effective method of
adding to the collection or replacing lesser
used sets that are deteriorating and taking
up valuable space. It has proven to be a reli-
able medium for long-term preservation of
resources. Resources available in microform
are indicated by MF in the left margin.
(Note: The microform version may be pro-
duced by a different vendor from the hard-
copy publisher.)
West reproduces their national reporter
system on ultrafiche which contains more
images per fiche than microfiche. The cost
of ultrafiche is approximately 80% of the
hardcopy price (or 70% if the hardcopy is
traded in). Publication averages 70 volumes
behind the hardcopy.
The Law Library Microform Consortium
is a nonprofit corporation attempting to pro-
vide a low-cost alternative to commercial pub-
lishers. The consortium is engaged in a con-
tinuing program of conversion of volumes of
the National Reporter System into microfiche
when the copyright lapses. Each unit can be
purchased separately, e.g., Northwestern
Reporter, v. 1-168, 1879-1918, for $3033
