I From the Editor-
MARK E. ESTES, Holme Roberts & Owen LLC

T he editorship of Trends encompasses a
wide range of responsibilities and oppor-
tunities. For example, each issue must con-
tain useful information to you, the reader,
and it must be presented so you can readily
discern which articles are of interest. Further,
the articles should be concise and to the point
to avoid wasting your time.
Trends will address the wide-ranging chal-
lenges facing us as managers and leaders,
e.g., rapidly changing technologies, shrinking
or static resources with increasing demands,
competition from others, and managing our
own time as well as the time of others.
The first article focuses on a favorite topic
of mine-quality of life. The feature article,
by Barbara Bevis Houston, was the AALL con-
tribution to the Law Related Associations
white paper on quality-of-life issues. Barbara
compiled the comments of many law librar-
ians into a single, cohesive statement. It
focuses on law firms because the audience,
Law Related Associations (ABA Law Practice
Section, Association of Legal Administrators,
American Association for Paralegal Educa-
tion, National Association of Legal Assistants,
Inc., National Court Reporters Association,

National Law Firm Marketing Association,
ABA Standing Committee on Legal Assistants,
National Association of Law Placement,
AALL, National Association of Legal Secre-
taries and National Federation of Paralegal
Associations) deals with the law firm envi-
ronment more than other employers of law
librarians.
The second article, by Joe Stephens,
addresses the pressures imposed by Type A
personalities on their colleagues and staff.
With this issue we make a slight format
change: a wider margin at the fold to facili-
tate binding or storing in a three-ring binder
as we at HRO have. In addition, before this
volume is completed we plan to add bar-
coding to ease check-in.
As always, we seek contributions from you,
our readers. Beginning with this issue, we can
offer a small honorarium to our authors.
Please send your article (preferably on disk)
to me at Holme Roberts & Owen LLC, 1700

tions or article ideas.
