Submitted for Your Approval, Part I:
A Little History of Approval Plans
By EDWARD T. HART, Head of Technical Services, Lawton Chiles Legal Information
Center, University of Florida, Levin College of Law, Gainesville, Florida
D uring my thirteen-year career in academic law libraries acquisitions and
collection development, my experiences with approval plans grew as
approval plans evolved, taking advantage of web 2.0 features. The approval plans
I worked with have spanned two libraries and three different vendors, and have
gone from paper to electronic slips and from books in print to e-books.
Approval plans are traditional ways for libraries to acquire monographs and
are a service provided by book jobbers such as Yankee Book Peddler and Coutts
Ingram. The plans let a library establish a profile with the parameters for the
automatic purchase of books. Profiles are drafted to identify the subject areas of
interest as well as non-subject parameters such as intended audience, format (ie.
monograph, series, annual, etc.), and publishers. Approval plans come in two
varieties: book plans and slip plans.
