A ccording to a recent survey conducted by Ms. Nongji Zhang, the East
Asian Law Bibliographer at Harvard University School of Law Library, the
Chinese law collection at Washington University School of Law Library ranks
fourth after Harvard University Law School Library, the Library of Congress, and
University of Washington Law School Library in terms of volume count.' The
three libraries mentioned with Washington University have significant acquisi-
tions budgets for their Chinese law materials and a staff whose exclusive job duties
are for their East Asian law collections. Washington University has only limited
resources to build a sizable Chinese law collection which supports Chinese law
teaching and research. According to an internal survey, there are about thirty
American law schools that offer Chinese law courses or seminars.2 Therefore, the
