Decisions, Decisions, Decisions:
Developing a Law Library Collection
for the Cbarlotte School of Law
By Bobbie Studwell, Associate Dean of Library and Information Services,
Charlotte School of Law
C ollection development gurus have told us for some time that collections are
changing and we in turn must change our buying habits. Many of us have
been involved with the care and feeding of evolving collections since vendors
started providing electronic access to treatises in the I990s. For most of us, our
routine is to prepare a yearly budget knowing we can add very little new material.
The bulk of our collections need ongoing maintenance, which eats up most of our
yearly allocation. So, imagine having the opportunity to start from scratch and
build a collection that will meet the needs of a new law school, satisfy many of
our student's requests for electronic access to everything, and hold down some
of those ongoing maintenance costs.
