hile studying for the bar exam, I received the best piece of professional advice
I have ever been given: Own your career. This is your career, not your firm's,
and you will need to invest in it. From that day forward, I have made every
professional decision through the lens of what investment is best for my career. In doing
such, joining the American Bar Association and TIPS was the first and best investment I
made for my career to ensure its long-term viability and success.
For myself, as for most young lawyers, ambition and determination are rarely in short
supply The challenge arises, however, to find outlets that allow young lawyers to become
actively involved and make meaningful contributions. In my search for such an outlet, I rec-
ognized that my membership in TIPS instantly began paying dividends. I was immediately

he Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section supports over 30 general committees. As
a TIPS member, you can now join as many as you want for free! To get started, once
you go online and join a general committee, you will receive the committee's news-
letters and announcements. If you don't hear from the committee, you should contact the
committee's chair. It's your choice to be either an active or passive member of a commit-
tee-so don't fear joining a few! If you are invited to join a specific committee, you definitely
should check it out. Whether you decide to stay or not, you will meet some great folks.
For those of you with more time for bar activities, general committees offer numerous
opportunities to get involved and to get your name out there. For writers, most commit-
tees publish a committee newsletter containing short articles on issues of interest to lawyers
