It is now exactly four years since the publication of the inaugural issue of
Theoretical Criminology in February 1997. With this issue, the first of
Volume 5, several editorial staff changes will be occurring. Piers Beirne has
decided to step down from co-editing the journal. He will be replaced by
Lynn Chancer, Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University,
though Piers will remain involved with the journal as an Associate Editor.
Lynn will be replaced as one of the journal's two book review editors by
Lisa Sanchez of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Along with announcing these changes, it seems appropriate to take stock
of the journal's achievements over these last four years. By various meas-
ures, Theoretical Criminology enjoys good health: the theoretical vigor of
the journal, especially in the debates and exchanges that we have cultivated
and frequently featured; the wide geographic spread of our authors and the
high quality of work published in these pages; the renown and creativity of
many of our authors, older and younger; the willingness and conscientious-
ness of board members and many others to review manuscripts; and the
solid and encouraging level of subscriptions (though we could always use
more). Moreover, at every point and turn, the staff at our publishers-Sage
Publications in London-have always been most competent and supportive.
The scholarly niche that Theoretical Criminology has filled in the four
short years of its existence is, by and large, the one that was originally
intended. The journal does indeed provide an anti-dogmatic forum for the
discussion of theoretical issues and concerns relevant to criminologists and
to all those who study crime. The intention of the editors has been, and
remains, that the journal be broad and inclusive, recognizing diverse lines
of thinking within criminology. We are eager to publish scholarship from
all the disciplines that currently constitute criminology, notably sociology,
history, anthropology, law, politics, criminal justice, psychology, juris-
prudence, philosophy, psychoanalysis, economics, geography, and develop-
ment studies. Moreover, we wish here to reaffirm our commitment to the
mission statement of Theoretical Criminology, which calls for focusing on
theory, cultivating an international dimension, and publishing only scholar-
ship of high quality.
How well has the journal fared in meeting these goals? This is a difficult
question with no easy answer. But let us offer a brief response. To date, we
have published work that spans a wide range of theoretical areas and con-
temporary debates. The theoretical perspectives we have featured include
feminism(s), sociobiology, social interactionism, and postmodernism(s).
