             From Campus to Bay Street: The


          Transition from Academic to Legal

It was the marble that really did it for me.

Gleaming, shimmering and polished to an almost mirror-like quality it was the vast expanse of the
white Italian marble of First Canadian Place in downtown Toronto that told me my career was
changing.

Gone were the crowded campuses I was accustomed to, with hordes of students huddled in groups
over laptops, iPods blaring, dressed in jeans, ironic hipster t-shirts and baseball caps. These were
replaced by an army of clean-shaven men, often suited or with crisp polo shirts and khakis nestling
multiple Blackberry holsters on their hips, women cradling cellphones and briefcases and engaging
in conference calls on the way to meetings, the sound of heels clacking on marble and granite and
deals being made filling the air. Things certainly were different now.

This was Bay Street.

These scenes unfold in front of me daily. I work at the Department of Justice library in downtown
Toronto, and so my trek to work takes me through First Canadian Place. As a backdrop to my new
career, its size and power and symbolism as the centre of Canadian finance cannot be adequately
described. The contrast between the open lawns and student hangouts where you could study or
