                               by Julie Carter
In September 2005 1 was working as the Information Centre Manager at Taylor Wessing in Central
London, putting together the final touches for my wedding a week or so later. I received an
unexpected phone call from my (now) husband to inform me that his employer had offered him a
job in Toronto and would I like to move - oh yes, and could I decide by the end of the day, please!!
In a move that goes against my tendency to over-think everything, I answered immediately: Yes,
sure, why not?

Eight weeks later I was about to get off the plane in the coldest country I have ever known. Sure, I
didn't have a job or a home (although I guess the Westin Harbour Castle was comfortable enough),
but it was one of the most exciting days of my life. After a short 'incident' at immigration - let's just
say I don't have a poker face and leave it at that - my husband and I were ready to start our new
lives in Canada.

I was incredibly fortunate that my husband's company had contacted the lawyers they use in
Toronto to ask for help on my behalf. A number of TALL members replied with useful suggestions
for job-hunting - thank you so much! (In particular, I would like to thank Laurel Murdoch and her
team Yvonne and Amy, at Heenan Blaikie, for taking me under their wing before and after I arrived.)

                                                                   (Continued on Page 4)
