                                by James Spence

IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT...

Late Friday evening October 31, 1997, I left the offices of Weir & Foulds: Barristers & Solicitors, where I had
worked for nearly nine years, for the last time. I made my way through the tunnels of Fort First Canadian Place
and into the TTC subway system. Eventually, I surfaced into a typical late October Toronto evening, dark, wet,
windy and chilly. It would be my last night in T.O. for what likely would be a long time: maybe forever. I wasn't'
feeling particularly emotional about this. More numb thinking about the thousand and one details that uprooting
one's life bring to mind, and occasionally giddy at the thought of the uncharacteristically unusual turn my career
had taken.

The following Monday morning, November 3, 1997, 1 walked in brilliant sunshine past palm and palmetto trees
and oleander hedges into the Hamilton, Bermuda offices of Conyers Dill & Pearman: Barristers & Attorneys,
(CD&P) to begin my new job as the firm's librarian.

To say that I was somewhat disoriented in those first few days (okay, weeks) would not quite capture the
complete state of utter confusion and sensory overload that I was in. I doubt that I will ever be so happy again to
see a set of Halsbury's Laws. When I saw those worn brown covers in my newly inherited library, it was like
meeting an old friend in a strange place-at last, a familiar face!
                                                                    (Continued on page 4)
