             Training Reference Staff:
                   A Case in Point

                       Joy Muller

In a library reference department, staying ahead of the growing
number of reference sources is a challenge. The wide variety of
formats-compact disks, multimedia, print and the Internet -
demand a commitment by library management to effectively train
reference staff. Training staff by providing guidelines and measurable
performance outcomes is essential to the efficient running of the
department and effectiveness of the services offered.

At Seneca, we were faced with the closure of our Sheppard campus
legal library and the transfer of library materials for the School of
Legal and Public Administration programs to the main campus library
(Newnham campus). While staff from the Sheppard campus library
were relocated along with the collection, their positions were
somewhat changed. Thus, if the reference staff at the main campus
were to serve the legal students and faculty effectively, commitment
to training was the number one priority. With a short lead time,
(closure was the end of April and the new semester started in May),
it was particularly useful that we had a training committee already
in place at the Seneca libraries. This committee was brought together
to determine a specific training plan. The following points were
determined as a result of the Seneca legal training scenario, but can
be used in a multitude of settings.

The first step in determining how to effectively train reference staff
in reference sources is to evaluate:

* the level of reference skills already in place
exactly who needs to be trained
who can be called upon to do the training
the time frame necessary to complete the training
• the identification of reference sources to be included
* current student and faculty needs
* expected outcomes.
