The information age is upon us and, like a star that is about to go supernova, the information explosion may
destroy our current universe as we know it. There is a peril for libraries and librarians if we do not keep
abreast of the technology and develop strategies for making maximum use of the available electronic infor-
mation efficiently and cost effectively.

At a recent symposium on the problems and challenges posed by electronic access to information, the
keynote speaker, Douglas E. Van Houweling, Vice Provost for Information Technology at the University of
Michigan, highlighted the changing role of libraries and challenged participants to develop strategies to
utilize technological advances to meet the information needs of users. Mr. Van Houweling described the
information explosion as an oppressive miasma of unfathomable opportunity which could become more
burden than opportunity. The process of digitization has created a new medium spanning human experience,
incorporating text, graphics, image, sound and video and integrating these media into a unified experience.
This new format won't fit onto library shelves, changing the way in which information or knowledge is
presented and disseminated, connected together to transmit
