Marketing the Law Library: A Round Table Discussion

                                        Ian Colvin
                                     Fraser & Beatty

On August 11, 1992, eight librarians met to discuss marketing. The agenda included the following ques-
tions: What does marketing mean to you and your library; What's in it for me; What are the constraints of
marketing. Finally we asked about the best and worst marketing ideas.
The participants were:
Maria Cece, Ministry of the Attorney General
                                     Ian Colvin, Fraser & Beatty
Debra Forman, Bora Laskin Library, International Business & Trade Law Librarian
Jane Freeman, Davies, Ward & Beck
Brady Leyser, Young & Rubicam (advertising firm)
Clare Lyons, Cassels, Brock & Blackwell
                                   Jane Simpson, Goodman & Carr
                               Linda Zardo, Blaney, McMurtry, Stapells
Inez Freeman (Moderator), Metropolitan Toronto Legal Department.

people within your organization
or outside as well? In a law
firm there is little reason to
market outside the firm al-

though the librarian's services
might be made available to firm
clients as a larger firm strategy.
A government library serving
multiple office would be more
concerned with going outside
the building.
Marketing is in a sense auto-
matic. It happens with contact
with clients and is derived from
the service provided. Improving
marketing is less a question of
introducing new practices or
ideas, than of becoming con-
scious of what
