TALL Salary Survey

  Questions/Comments by the
        Membership on the
  Salary Survey Questionnaire

Salary Survey Committee

In February 1991 the TALL Salary Survey Committee
undertook its biannual survey of the TALL membership and
its libraries in order to get (hopefully) an accurate picture of
the salaries of librarians and library technicians in the Toronto
area.
In order to make the salary as simple (and accurate) as
possible, many of the questions which had been asked in
previous TALL salary surveys (such as number of students,
size of collection, services offered etc) were not asked this
year. The purpose was to determine salary levels only and
match them against position, education, years of experience
and size of firm. To this end we feel that the survey was

successful
Some of those who completed the
comments or asked questions about
the survey itself This report is an
attempt to answer queries that our
members had

1. Have you considered how
benefits contribute to the overall
survey?

In previous years the survey did
tabulate the types of benefits, such
as vacation time, health and dental
plans, insurance policies, etc. This
was not included this year as it was
felt by the members of the
committee that benefits are not
negotiable and, therefore, of less
interest than in the past, when many
institutions, especially private law
firms, offered very few benefits.
It appears from the response that
we had that the number of vacation
days may be negotiable in some
circumstances and we have made
a recommendation to the TALL
Executive that the number of

vacation days be surveyed in the future.

2. Do law firms of a certain size hire only technicians
because they can pay them less or because they do not
know the difference? Do very large firms that just
employ technicians and call them librarians get value
to the same degree that equivalent major firms get from
their MLS employees? Do they know the difference (if
any) in the quality of the service? Do they care? Do they
just consider law clerks to be lawyers, so technicians
and librarians are interchangeable too?

  Interesting questions,
Committee.

3. Do you have any data or
information that would prove
the value added a GOOD
librarians brings to a firm? Can
you prove that the firm would
be less profitable with a good
librarian providing good library
services that are completely
attuned to the goals and
objectives and needs of the firm?
What is a good librarian? What
are the criteria of goodness? Who
  decides? As with the previous
  questions, this questions nurtures a
  hidden agenda.
A number of articles that have
been written over the years in
support of hiring librarians in firms.
  Again, individuals holding librarians
positions have, as in any job or
  profession, various levels of skills
and abilities to perform their jobs.

  4. The TALL Salary Survey is an
  excellent information source
