Message from the Chairman
Section Highlights For 1973-74 are:
New Consultant. Professor James P. White, Indiana University
Indianapolis Law School, has been selected to succeed Professor
Millard H. Ruud as ABA Consultant on Legal Education.
The Section as Accreditor. Our most important business has
been and continues to be the accreditation of law schools, in-
cluding the gathering and dissemination of information on legal
education.
Because of the large number of new law schools and our effort
to get current on reinspections, this year's accreditation agenda
may be the longest ever. Meetings of the Accreditation Committee
will be extended to three days. The Council's agenda, at least in
Houston, will be largely taken up by consideration of requests for
provisional approval.
Continuing to develop our accreditation program, a workshop
was held in Washington, D.C. with members of ABA/AALS inspection
teams. Similar meetings are planned in connection with the AALS
meetinq this December in New Orleans, and at the annual meeting
ift Honolulu.
The Section has been rerecognized as a national accrediting
agency by H.E.W. and the National Commission on Accrediting.
Recognition criteria include the requirement, which we are now
implementing, that all visits be preceded by a self-study conducted
by the school being visited.
The Section as a Forum. ABA President Chesterfield Smith has
challenged our Section to become a much larger and more active forum
for discussion, research, and action pertaining to legal education.
