NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF LAW REVIEWS 2000
INTRODUCTION
SECTION I: THE PUBLICATION PROCESS
The Nuts and Bolts of Article Criteria and Selection Terri LeClercq 437
The selection of authors and articles is one of the most critical functions of any law
review and often determines a law review's ability to succeed. This Article provides
tips and caveats that general and specialty law reviews and journals alike can use
to their benefit. Specifically, the Author stresses the importance of the proper use
of faculty for soliciting articles and a law review's establishment of guidelines to
address various problems associated with author and article selection.
Substantive Editing versus Technical Editing:
How Law Review Editors Do Their Job Anne Enquist 451
Law review editors often have a hard time adjusting to their new role of evaluating
and critiquing the work of professors and established legal scholars, resulting in
entire editorial boards missing fundamental problems in a particular article. The
Author provides a solution to this problem by recommending the adoption of two
separate phases of editing - a substantive editing phase, which addresses what the
article actually communicates, and a technical editing phase, which addresses the
form the author uses to communicate. As examples for any law review to follow,
the Author provides two substantive edits of two different author submissions as
appendices to the Article.
Citation Frustrations - And Solutions Darby Dickerson 477
Checking the substantive and technical validity of citations is an important - yet
frustrating - part of a law review's duty. This Article addresses the frustrations
experienced by law review staff members, editors, and authors. After identifying
common problems, the Author presents various solutions and emphasizes the
importance of training and communication among all involved in the publication
process. In addition, the Author provides a model of completing citation checks
that any law review is welcome to use and adapt.
Law Reviews, Judicial Opinions, and Their
Relationship to Writing Honorable Abner J Mikva 521
In his keynote address at the close of the National Conference of Law Reviews
2000, the Honorable Abner J. Mikva provided insight and advice that can be
utilized by law students and lawyers alike. While the overall law review experience
should be highly valued, the Author suggests that most legal writing is too long
and overly footnoted - a refreshing viewpoint on the status of law review
scholarship.
