Social & Legal Studies is a new venture in the field of sociology of law, critical
legal studies and critical criminology which arises out of an established
commitment to analytical scholarship which is accessible, challenging and able to
formulate and shape the current debates in this terrain of intellectual work.
The Journal brings together a team of people who formerly collaborated to
produce The International Journal of the Sociology of Law but who, together
with some new members, have decided it is time to give a greater vibrancy to the
production of critical knowledge in this increasingly important field. Social &
Legal Studies has four main aims:

* the publication of committed critical scholarship,
0 the promotion of non-Western perspectives on law, regulation and
      criminology,
* the integration of feminist analyses at every level of scholarship,
* the advancement of accessible theoretical approaches which enhance

substantive work analytically, and in such a way that it will have international
relevance rather than parochial interest.
Social & Legal Studies seeks to promote a greater knowledge and understand-
ing of work being carried out in developing countries, Eastern Europe and the
less academically dominant Western countries. We are of the firm belief that
exciting and innovating work is being produced yet remains at risk of invisibility
on the international scene, leaving dominant Western traditions and perspectives
unmoved by their potential challenge. Our commitment to feminist work also
