6 Sing. L. Rev. ix (1985)

Since the revival of the Singapore Law Review in 1983, we have striven
to establish it as a forum of discussion amongst students. The Feature Section,
the yearly Interview and the Tribute have become regular features of the Review
and we hope that they will continue to be used as catalysts in promoting interest
in local legal issues and personalities. This year, the Review has gone one step
further. Because of the lamentable absence of the tradition of public lecturing
in Singapore, we felt it opportune to organise an annual lecture series. The Hon
Mr Justice Punch Coomaraswamy inaugurated the Singapore Law Review Lecture
Seres when he spoke on The Perils of Drafting in November 1984.
Besides the lecture, the Editorial Board is also pleased to announce the
introduction of the Singapore Law Review Prize. Due to the generosity of our
well-wishers, a S$200.00 cash prize will be awarded yearly for the best contribu-
tion from any matriculated student of the National University of Singapore. We
hope that this will provide some incentive (hopefully not the sole incentive) for
more students to make their contributions to the Review.
In our Feature Section, we concentrate on the Family in Singapore. the
rapid changes in our social structure brought toll on the institution of the family
and our concern centres round the administration of family law in Singapore as
well as the new technology that threatens to eradicate our traditional concept of
the family.
In Conversation features Prof Geoffrey Bartholomew, a former lecturer
and Dean of our faculty whose writings on the Singapore Legal System have
become essential reading for any student of the local legal system and history.
Finally, in our Tribute, we pay homage to the late Mr A V Winslow, former
Solicitor General and one of our most respected judges.
Much hard work hasbeen put into this Review;some have sacrificed much of
their vacations working on it; rewarded only by the satisfaction that the Review has
fulfilled its role. However, we cannot just depend on a few people and expect
them to carry on indefinitely - the time has come for us all, as responsible
members of the student body to take up our cudgels and pitch in. This is the
only way we can ensure continuity for the Review. It is a continuity with a
purpose, a continuity of our legal conscience.
