  LEGAL WRITING INSTITUTE ESTABLISHED

By Laurel Oates and Chris Rideout

     On August 15 and 16, 1984, the
University of Puget Sound School of Law
 hosted a conference, Teaching Legal
Writing, funded in part by the National
Endowment for the Humanities. One hundred
 and eight representatives from fifty-six
law schools in Canada and the United
 States attended the conference, which
 featured presentations by nationally
 recognized speakers and small-group
 workshops.

At the close of the conference,
conference participants approached us ant
asked that we explore methods for main-
taining the relationships begun at the
conference and for continuing the exchange
of information and ideas about legal
writing programs and the teaching of legal
writing.

In response to this request, in
September 1984 we sent a questionnaire to
those who had attended the conference. In
the questionnaire, we asked the partici-
pants whether they would support the
establishment of Legal Writing Institute
and, if they favored the establishment of
an Institute, what types of activities
they would like the Institute to sponsor.

     Thirty-eight people completed and re-
turned the questionnaire. All thirty-
eight stated that they wanted to establish
an Institute. The participants responded
as follows to the question about what

activities they would like the Institute
to sponsor:

Twenty-six of the respondents stated that
a conference should be held every year;
nine respondents stated that a conference
should be held every other year.

           Institute Established

In response to the results of the
questionnaire, the University of Puget
Sound School of Law has agreed to
establish the Legal Writing Institute. W(
decided that during its first year the
Institute can publish two newsletters and
the first issue of the journal, with
support from the National Endowment for
the Humanities. (After the first year,
that source of financial support will no
longer be available.)

Because the AALS section on Legal
Reasoning and Legal Research and Writing
is sponsoring a conference on Legal
Research and Writing to be held on March
22nd and 23rd in Chicago, the Institute
will not sponsor a conference this year.
