OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY
SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK
Edited by William J. Lillard.

VOLUME II. JANUARY 1, 1926 NO. 1
SPEAKING OF THE OFFICE.
I have been so busy for three weeks that I have not
been able to make my customary visits to the courts. We have had
an extremely active month all along the line in all departments
as well as a very successful one. A very large number of pleas of
guilty in commercial fraud cases shows the impression being made
by the staff upon Associated Defendants, Inc., and even more
dramatically shows the effect of denial of bail after conviction
where there is no reasonable probability of reversal.
The entire staff has been under more pressure than at any
time during the ten months of our administration and the regular
closing hour appears to have been automatically advanced to anywher
from six to ten o'clock. Absorption of a large number of new men
takes time and necessarily involves various digestive disturbances
but we are doing better all the time and the first anniversary on
March 2nd ought to register very considerable progress. Sixty days
is a long time in this office under present conditions where so
many men are without previous experience in public work.
