An apparatus for instruction and a critical and constructive commentary
on the living law which is a major product of the schools--thus Professor
G. H. Robinson of Cornell, in the preface of,his recent case book on Public
Utilities, characterizes the law review notes and articles cited therein.1 Should,
then, every law school publish a review? Or is there danger that the present
multiplication of law reviews will tend to lessen the aggregate contribution
of all law reviews to the law?
Thirty-seven of the sixty-seven schools, members of the Association of
American Law Schools, and eight schools not members of the Association now
publish law reviews. Since three of these schools join in the publication of
a single review, this makes forty-three reviews published by law schools.2
There are, of course, many legal periodicals which are not published by
law schools. Three magazines dealing with special fields of the law are pub-
