FROM THE EDITOR

   - HIS IS THE FIRST ISSUE OF POLITICAL THEORY's
seventh volume, and we are pleased that it seems to cover such a broad
range of topics and methodologies. Our next issue will begin with a
mini-symposium on the thought of Jean-Paul Sartre but we otherwise
do not plan further symposia for this volume and hope, as a conse-
quence, to be able to somewhat reduce a growing backlog.
We would also like to congratulate Brian Barry of the University
of Chicago on his appointment as Editor of Ethics-a bittersweet
event for us, because it means we will no longer be able to rely on the
careful and penetrating judgment of one of the most active members
of our editorial executive committee. Professor Barry will continue on
our editorial board, but will actually be lending his main energies
 to Ethics-their gain, our loss.
Because of changes in personnel and procedures at Sage Publica-
tions, an unusual number of errors appeared in the November 1978
issue. We regret any inconvenience or embarrassment caused for our
editors, contributors, and readers.
We note with sadness the passing of Harold D. Lasswell, a distin-
guished member of our editorial board who lent his international
credentials as one of the century's foremost social scientists to Political
Theory in the earliest days of its inception.
