FROM THE EDITOR

EADERS OF POLITICAL THEORY will perhaps be interested
to learn that our colleagues at POLITICAL STUDIES, during a recent
change of editor, included the following comments in an editorial
statement:

A major and probably controversial change in editorial policy which I plan to
make concerns the general balance of the articles published in the journal.
Over the years, POLITICAL STUDIES has tended to publish a relatively large
number of articles that are in effect commentaries on the old masters of
political thought. Indeed, as Fred Ridley has reminded us in his valedictory
editorial, it has gained a well-deserved reputation as one of the leading journals
in this kind of political theory. Since the arrival of POLITICAL THEORY
which is mainly devoted to publishing such articles, however, the case for
publishing so many in POLITICAL STUDIES is that much less strong.

We appreciate the genial deference, but must dissent from the implication
that we are primarily a journal of historical political thought. As this issue
again demonstrates, we provide a forum for political theory of every kind:
modern and classical, conceptual and textual, analytic and historical,
descriptive and ideological, European and American. We are happy to take
up the slack left by journals changing their policies, but only to the extent
that it conforms with our editorial commitment to political theory in the
very broadest sense.

                                   -Benjamin R. Barber
