Greetings to all. This past summer in the United States found Political
Theory in transit from the University of Virginia, where for six years it
has been under the guidance of Stephen K. White's exceedingly able edito-
rial hands, to the University of Minnesota, where I hope it will continue to
flourish under the editorship that has now passed to me. Fortunate it is that
Stephen does not share my size or taste in footwear; otherwise, I would have
to venture the impossible and fill his shoes. I begin my stewardship of the
journal by thanking him for the time he has devoted to smoothing this transi-
tion and providing invaluable counsel and advice. Both Stephen and J. Don-
ald Moon, the former consulting editor, have set high standards of scholarly
judgment and academic excellence for the journal to strive to uphold. As
another of my distinguished predecessors in this office has noted, the burden
of being the editor of Political Theory is also a great privilege. In recognition
of that fact, I enter these pages with a sincere thanks to my colleagues within
the political theory field who have seen fit to entrust and honor me with this
position.
Anyone who has spent time with Political Theory (whose first issue was
published in 1973) will notice how fully it lives up to its billing on the inside
journal page. Like the field of inquiry that sets it off, the journal is interna-
tional and invites work from scholars of historical and modern political
thought, contemporary political theory, and normative and analytical politi-
cal philosophy. The journal welcomes every sort of theoretical approach and
methodological perspective (these are by now far too numerous to list). If
political theory is an intellectual territory bounded by a disciplinary fence,
then the territory must be viewed as a wide open space that stretches over
diverse terrain, and the fence itself is more akin to a neighbor than a barrier to
other disciplines and subject matters. These subject matters are also too
many to number, but they range at least from history and philosophy to econ-
omy, society, culture, ethics, psychology, discourse, language, literature, and
law. I want to reaffirm the commitment to keep this journal as expansive a ter-
rain of political theorizing as possible, constituted by a range of different,
distinctive, and dissentient scholarly perspectives and points of view. Or, to
shift metaphors, we could recall Antonio Gramsci's vindication of party
democracy: An orchestra doing a rehearsal, with each instrument playing on
its own, creates the impression of a horrible cacophony, writes Gramsci,
and yet such activity is the necessary condition for the orchestra to live as a
