FROM THE EDITOR

7ITH THIS ISSUE, Number 1 of our Third Volume, POLITI-
CAL THEORY undergoes a major editorial restructuring. Robert Lamb
and Walter Odajnyk, who founded the journal and gave it editorial
guidance during its first two years, have retired from the Editorship to join
the Editorial Board. Their vital contribution to POLITICAL THEORY is
permanently recognized in their new masthead listing as founding editors.
The Editorial Executive Committee, now a fully formalized steering
committee responsible for editorial continuity on the journal, has asked
me to succeed Professors Lamb and Odajnyk for a three year term; I have
accepted their charge.
We have also determined that the Section Editorships, while vital to the
journal in its early years, are no longer editorially viable. Under the new
structure, our managing editor, Thomas Horne, our Book Review Editor,
Dennis Thompson, and I-working closely with members of the Editorial
Board-will assume full editorial responsibility for POLITICAL THEORY.
This new arrangement will. be in effect from October 1, 1974. The
indispensable contributions of the section editors-Sheldon Wolin, Judith
N. Shklar, George Kateb, Brian Barry, and C. B. Macpherson-have alone
made it possible for POLITICAL THEORY to become established, and the
profession owes these colleagues a considerable debt. Fortunately, they
shall all continue to serve the journal as member of the Editorial Board.
We do not anticipate any major changes in editorial outlook.
POLITICAL THEORY will continue to devote itself to an extended
colloquy among all political theorists. Although section headings will no
longer appear on the masthead, we will continue to seek articles
