28 Pol. Theory 3 (2000)

handle is hein.journals/ptxa28 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITORIAL
BEGINNING ONE'S TERM as editor just as the new century dawns
seems to demand some lofty comments about the state of the world. I will
ignore this imperative.
Political Theory has now grown to a ripe middle age. I was in graduate
school in 1973 when the journal's first issue appeared. My ensuing enthusi-
asm resulted in the submission there of my first would-be publication. The
paper was, I must admit, rejected. But I did not hold a grudge (or at least not
for too long). As I think back to that time, I realize what an extraordinary debt
political theorists today owe to the founding fathers and mother (Judith
Shklar) of the journal for their creation of an unmatched space for sustained
reflection on politics that is open to a broad variety of approaches. It was, in
the best sense of the word, a founding. I want to reaffirm that commitment
to constitute an open space for a range of voices in political theory. My hunch,
however, is that today this range is a good deal wider than it was in 1973. This,
of course, makes the challenge especially formidable.
Tracy Strong has ably maintained and augmented the legacy of Political
Theory over the past ten years. And thanks to him, the process of taking over
the editorship has been smoother than I had any right to expect. I am in his
debt in many ways. It is a pleasure to announce that the executive committee
has elected Tracy to the editorial board.
With this issue, George Kateb steps down as consulting editor. George has
been actively-and continually-involved with the journal since its found-
ing, first as a member of the executive committee and then as consulting edi-
tor. No one has had a comparable influence on the journal. It is difficult for me
to think of Political Theory without thinking simultaneously of his voice.
Even without his physical presence at editorial meetings, I know I will not be
the only one who still feels his effect. If this were a sports team, we would
retire his jersey. But luckily, there is no sign of George's retirement from
intellectual life, as you will see from the lead essay in this issue.
J. Donald Moon joins me now as the new consulting editor. His many con-
tributions to political theory are familiar to readers of this journal, especially
his well-received Constructing Community: Moral Pluralism and Tragic
Conflicts. I am deeply gratified to have such a source of good judgment and
insight.
