EDITORIAL

T HE ANNUAL MEETING of the Editorial Executive Committee was held
at the meeting of the American Political Science Association in Washington
last year. One member of that committee rotates off each year: This year
marked the end of Sheldon Wolin's period of service. George Kateb, Alan
Houston, Nancy Rosenblum, and I are grateful to Sheldon for the counsel he
has given us over the past six years; I know that we are joined by the previous
editor, William Connolly, in this sentiment. I fully intend to continue taking
advice from him, however.
A spot on the Executive Committee was thus opened up. We voted to ask
J. Peter Euben, of the University of California at Santa Cruz, to assume the
position. I am delighted that he has agreed to do so. Over the past several
years, Peter's has become one of the most interesting voices in political
theory, especially in classical political theory. His book, The Tragedy of
Political Theory: The Road Not Taken, rests, as do his other writings, on deep
and extensive knowledge of classical drama and political philosophy; they
offer not only important and original readings of classical texts but of modern
politics and of the role of political theory. I look forward to working with him.
The term of the editor and book review editor is a renewable three years.
After due consideration, the Executive Committee voted to ask the present
editorial group to stay on for another three-year term. With some due
hesitation, we all agreed. This term will, however, be my last. My thanks to
the committee for its expression of support.
My thanks also to George Kateb for his counsel and to Nancy Rosenblum
for the series of excellent book reviews that keep appearing. George's advice
is quiet and goes unsung, but it is of great help. Nancy's position is thankless-
good reviews are the author's due and bad ones the editor's fault. My thanks
again. I especially want to thank Alan Houston, whose hand appears most
often invisibly but is in almost everything that the journal has done. I don't
think I could have managed the past year without him.
Every year, a new editorial assistant starts a two-year term. And inevitably
one leaves. Alan and I are grateful to Deanna Zachary for her help over the
past two years. We will miss her on the journal, although she will of course
