FROM THE EDITOR

A LL READERS OF Political Theory owe a great debt to William
Connolly, who has served as Editor for the past six years. Indeed, as the files
streamed across the continent last summer and fall, I found myself not a little
apprehensive at picking up the burden that he carried so well and with such
apparent ease. I only hope that I can be a reasonable successor to the strength,
coherence, and intelligence he brought to the journal.
All such transitions are multiple. After 10 years of consistently interesting
reviews, Richard Flathman steps down as Book Review Editor. His will be
a hard act to follow and Political Theory is fortunate that Nancy Rosenblum
has agreed to take over. I look forward to working with her.
In addition, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Houston
as Managing Editor. Professor Houston joins the UCSD department this year,
having just completed a book on Algernon Sidney.
With these changes, two spots became open on the Executive Editorial
Committee, which serves the journal as a combination of always dependable,
fall-back reviewers and Nocturnal Council. One opening comes from my
assumption of the editorship, and the other from the regular six-year rotation
that has moved Hanna Pitkin off the committee. The readers of Political
Theory are in her debt for the continuing insight and intelligence that she
brought to journal affairs.
We are very pleased that Richard Ashcraft has agreed to take over for the
five years left in the slot that I vacated. Ashcraft is deservedly well-known
for his work on political theory and ideology and especially his two magis-
terial volumes on Locke. He has changed the way in which we think about
Locke; his new work on Mill promises to do the same.
Finally, we are delighted that Jane Mansbridge has accepted to fill the
other slot. Her recent work, especially Beyond Adversary Democracy, has
added an important theoretical and empirical dimension to our understanding
of the theory and practice of democracies, as well as to the theory and practice
of our understandings of democracy.
Some individuals remain. I am delighted that George Kateb has agreed to
stay on as Consulting Editor. I have long valued his counsel and corrective.
I would have wanted to receive it anyhow.
