FROM THE EDITOR

W E ARE PLEASED to welcome Tracy Strong to the Executive
Editorial Committee. Tracy brings a distinctive perspective to political
theory. His work on Nietzsche and allied issues deserves the excellent
reviews it has received. As he has been a reader for several years, this
appointment formalizes a relationship already well established.
In accord with our six-year rotational system, John Pocock moves
off the Committee this year. Not only is Pocock one of the most
distinguished theorists in the English-speaking world, his role with this
journal has been indispensable to its development during the last decade
and a half. I'm certain that all members of the theory community join the
Executive Editorial Committee in thanking him for the advice and
support he has provided to Political Theory.
The number of journals pertinent to readers and writers in political
theory continues to mushroom, partly in response to the growing
diversity of theoretical orientations represented today. Not only are
some established journals in political science active in this respect
(Polity and Political Studies are perhaps notable here), there are
journals in philosophy (Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs, Social
Theory and Practice, Philosophy of the Social Sciences, The Review of
Metaphysics), journals in literary theory and allied fields (Raritan,
Representations, Critical Inquiry, Signs, Diacritics), journals in social
and political thought (The History of Political Thought, History and
Theory, Theory and Society, The Canadian Journal of Political and
Social Theory, Political Theory), numerous journals with distinct
ideological orientations, and several others which do not fit into this
rough and ready scheme of classification.
The newest entry is the Journal of Theoretical Politics. In its recent
announcement it pledges to provide a forum, which is currently
lacking, for the publication of original papers seeking to make genuinely
theoretical contributions to the study of politics. While theorists in
diverse intellectual traditions are encouraged to submit their work, the
journal wants each topic to be treated rigorously and analytically, and
it will not publish articles on the history of political thought. It is a
pleasure to encounter such a blunt declaration of Theoretical Ideology;
it will be interesting to observe (from a distance, no doubt) this new
