Welcome to the flagship journal of ASAPIL, the Association
for Scientific Advancement in Psychological Injury and Law.
ASAPIL provides a unique framework to keep up-to-date in
the field of psychological injury and law. It allows workers
in the field to learn about cutting-edge psychological and
legal findings and critical practice matters, including the
issue of cross-disciplinary communication. Our mission is,
first, to promote research in the scientific study of psycho-
logical injuries in individuals pursuing claims in court or
related proceedings and, second, to facilitate the appropriate
application of the science in the field to practitioner's
individual assessments and to legal work with individuals.
Therefore, we foster the scientific investigation of
conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder, chronic
pain, and mild traumatic brain injury, including their
relevance to clinical interviews, psychological testing, and
report writing, testimony, and so on. These psychological
conditions may manifest after events that are perceived as
traumatic, are physically injurious, or both. Often, they

require intensive rehabilitative efforts, but when they are
serious and long lasting, they result in disability claims and/
or lead to tort actions or related actions. Professionals in the
field evaluate the legitimacy of the claims and investigate
confounding factors, including possible malingering. They
adopt a multifactorial model of causality, considering
possible effects of preexisting, event-related, post-event,
and ongoing factors unrelated to the event.
One of our goals is improve the use of psychological
expertise by the legal profession and the courts. The
organization also welcomes other mental health, rehabilitation,
and forensic professionals such as psychiatrists, vocational
assessors, and psychiatric nurses and social workers.
Our educational and professional initiatives include a
yearly conference, continuing education events, the journal
on the topic, an e-newsletter, a list serve, a membership list,
and our website.
Psychological Injury and Law: Aims and Scope
Psychological Injury and Law (PIL) is a journal designed
as a multidisciplinary forum for the dissemination of
research articles and scholarly exchanges about issues
pertaining to the interface of psychology and law in the
area of trauma, injury, and their psychological impact. The
journal intends to help build the evidentiary research base
of the field and to critically examine its concepts and
practice.
Psychological impairments and disabilities may arise
from physical and/or mental injuries ascribed to alleged
negligent actions. They need to be judiciously assessed for
their validity and treated when evaluated as valid. They
lead to legal and related action when there are long-term or
permanent effects.
